Mobility scooters can provide incredible freedom and independence, especially for those who find it difficult to get around due to mobility challenges. One of the questions we get most often is if Medicare or other insurance plans will cover the cost of a mobility scooter, such as our Portable Lightweight Folding Mobility Scooter by SmartScoot®. Here’s what you need to know:

Medicare Only Covers Certain Types of Scooters

Medicare typically does not cover lightweight scooters like SmartScoot. Under Medicare guidelines, a scooter is only covered if it is deemed medically necessary—specifically if you are unable to get around your home even with the help of a wheelchair. If Medicare does cover a scooter, it is usually a larger, bulkier model that is not as portable and often requires an external lift for transportation.

According to Medicare’s website, they specifically state the following:

“Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers power-operated vehicles (scooters) and wheelchairs as durable medical equipment (DME) if: The doctor treating your condition submits a written order stating that you have a medical need for a wheelchair or scooter for use in your home.”

They go on to explain the types of limitations and doctor requirements, as well as a full breakdown of the types of equipment, or DME, that they do cover. When DME is eligible for coverage, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after you meet your Part B Medicare deductible. The DME that is covered by Medicare are manual wheelchairs, power-operated vehicles/scooters, and power wheelchairs. There are only six (6) power-operated vehicles/scooters listed as covered by Medicare. Each of these six scooters is classified as “heavy duty” or nonportable type scooters, making them not ideal for those looking for a lightweight, foldable, or portable scooter.

SmartScoot® and HandyScoot® Are Classified as Mobility Assist Products, Not Medical Devices

SmartScoot Scooters are innovative, lightweight mobility solutions designed to help users regain their freedom. However, it’s important to note that they are classified as mobility assist products and not medical devices. As such, they do not have the billing codes required by insurance carriers, including Medicare, for coverage.

Our customers love that our scooters are lightweight and able to be folded and placed into small spaces, like the trunk of your car or even taken with you on an airplane or cruise ship. Our scooters still offer the flexibility as more heavy-duty scooters, while offering the transportability others don’t. The seat height, backrest, steering column, and wheel width are all adjustable.

Check With Your Supplemental Insurance

While Medicare may not cover the cost of mobility scooters that are classified as mobility assist products, some supplemental insurance plans might. These policies vary greatly, and it’s always a good idea to check directly with your carrier to see if they offer partial coverage for the cost of the scooter.

We Do Not Work Directly With Insurance Companies

At SmartScoot, we do not deal directly with insurance companies. This means that we do not file claims on your behalf. However, we encourage you to reach out to your insurance provider to explore what options may be available for coverage or reimbursement. SmartScoot will of course provide a full invoice for any purchases made through our store.

Insurance Coverage Can Change

It’s always worth noting that insurance coverage can change from year to year. So even if your carrier doesn’t offer coverage now, they may in the future. That’s why it’s always worth checking with your insurance provider annually. Both Medicare and health insurance can be incredibly complex and confusing. We’ve found that health insurance brokers are a great place to start if you have questions.Always do your due diligence and check multiple sources for reviews online in places like Google, Yelp, your local NextDoor app, and Facebook. Most health insurance brokers are free for you to use and only make money from the insurance companies if they sell you a plan. The honest, trustworthy brokers are usually happy to answer questions without charging you anything. Never offer information to anyone who calls you or solicits information from you without you contacting them first.

Your Purchase May Be Eligible for Deductible or HSA Benefits

In some cases, the purchase of a mobility scooter may be applied toward your annual deductible or qualify under a Health Savings Account (HSA) plan. Again, it’s best to verify these details with your insurance provider or financial advisor to ensure you can maximize your benefits.

We Hope We’ve Helped

By understanding your options when it comes to Medicare and supplemental insurance, you can make an informed decision about purchasing a mobility scooter. Be sure to check with your insurance provider or health insurance broker for the most up-to-date coverage information and how it may apply to your purchase. And of course, if you have any questions about the SmartScoot mobility scooter, we’re here to help!
